About Breast Cancer
- It is estimated that 1 in 8 women will develop breast cancer at some point during her life.
- Every 12 minutes a woman in the U.S. dies from breast cancer.
- According to the American Cancer Society (ACS), in 2006 an estimated 212,940 women and 1,720 men will be diagnosed with breast cancer.
- Approximately 41,430 deaths will result from those diagnosed.
- Nearly all breast cancers can be treated successfully if detected early. The most effective ways of detecting breast cancer at an early, curable stage are to have annual mammograms starting at age 40 and to have a clinical breast exam by a doctor each year. Although risks for getting breast cancer include things that cannot be changed (such as family history), some things that may reduce a woman's risk of getting breast cancer include being physically active, avoiding obesity and weight gain, and reducing alcohol use.
IBC is the newest form of breast cancer and does not discriminate with age. It can and has affected girls as young as 16 years old.
IBC Symptoms:
- Rapid increase in breast size
- Redness
- Skin hot to the touch
- Persistent itching
- Thickening of breast tissue
IBC is the most aggressive form of breast cancer. There may be no lumps present and it cannot be detected with a mammogram.
IBC may look like a simple bug bite, but can reach stage 4 by the time it is detected.
You can never be too cautious. See your doctor if you notice anything out of the ordinary.
